It seems like briefcase theft on trains is common in Amsterdam... a couple of friends and I went to Amsterdam in 2000, and a similar thing happened on the local train going back to Brussels. One of my friends left his briefcase on the rack above the seat, and at some stage before we reached Amsterdam, it got stolen, though we don't know exactly when. Poor fella lost his passport, PDA and some other important documents. Not surprisingly, the police officer at the station said that stolen briefcases on the train was common and there was nothing he could do.

Had a somewhat similar experience a couple of years ago, albeit on a plane. Was one of the last to get off, and waiting for the couple behind me to pass so I could grab my laptop from the overhead compartment. They picked it up and had a hushed 30 second conversation about stealing it, before putting it back. You'd have to be pretty stupid to do that though.
